Although some establishments are beginning to open their doors again, schools and other businesses are continuing to have people working remotely during the 2020 pandemic. We are in our seventh month of disrupted social connections, and the impact of this is felt even more strongly among people beginning new roles in companies with colleagues they have never met in a work culture they have never directly experienced. The quick smiles and social chats that would brighten our days on the job are not available to us now, and in some cases the attendance for remote social happy hours may have started to wane.
Some of the most important questions on employee satisfaction surveys include questions about enjoying company culture, feeling connected to coworkers, feeling valued, and finding the work meaningful. With a remote work experience, all of these elements are greatly diminished, and can contribute to employee dissatisfaction and problems with retention much earlier for new hires and their employers respectively.
Since companies typically have a protocol for announcing new hires, I highly recommend that one way to help create a social connection at the start of the new hires’ employment would be to invite new hires to write their own introduction as if they were directly speaking to their colleagues. This would allow the new person’s natural speaking style to emerge and resonate with colleagues, and create interest in the new person’s professional skills and potential contributions as well as a personal connection with their personal interests. A personalized introduction may also inspire coworkers to contact new hires and welcome them directly, and respond to the details for an added sense of connection.
